Beacon PG-99, Green Bay PG-101 and Chehalis PG-94 in "Guantanamo" Bay, Cuba

"The gunboats pioneered the use of marine gas turbines, paving the way for Spruance and follow on classes. This was the beginning of the end for expensive nuclear cruisers.

Seen any in commission lately?  In my memory, I recall that shortly before the decision was made on power for the Spruance class, the NAVSEA gunboat class desk got a call from the Spruance destroyer project office wanting to know the total hours on the turbines, by individual hull. Shortly thereafter the decision to have the worlds first turbine powered destroyers was announced.  There is no doubt in my mind the timing was not coincidental."

Why is there no PG-91?

There was a fire at Tacoma Boatbuilding and the Grand Rapids (PG-98) was nearly destroyed; the materials being assembled for Douglas (PG-100) were also damaged. Both were of course, eventually commissioned. (Refer to Jane's Fighting Ships.)

PGM-91 was built, but it not an Asheville class ship. Rather, it was one of a number of patrol vessels built by the U.S. for foreign navies under the Military Assistance Program, which included PGM 33 to 83 and PGM 102 to 124. PGM-91 was built for South Vietnam, where it served at the Tho Chau, HQ-610. (Refer to Navsource.org.)

The out-of-sequence hull number was strictly due to how the vessels were ordered. The Navy built the 84 series (84 - 90) of the Asheville class, then there was a break before the ships of the revised 92 series (92 - 101) were ordered.
