Friday we headed out on our second tour, busses were loaded and we departed at 8:45. Our destination, Kartchner Caverns State Park. This "live" cave, discovered in 1974, is host to a wide variety of unique minerals and formations. Water percolates from the surface and calcite formations continue to grow, including stalactites dripping down like icicles and giant stalagmites reaching up from the ground. The Discovery Center features museums exhibits, a large gift shop, regional displays, theater, and educational information about the caverns and the surrounding landscape. For those of you not enthused at the idea of going inside a cave, I urge you to go online and watch some of the videos of the inside of these caverns. They are absolutely huge, this is not a tour of a small cave I assure you. There were also campgrounds, hiking trails, lockers, shaded picnic areas, a deli, an amphitheater, and a hummingbird garden. Following lunch on your own at the Bat Cave Cafe, we left for a visit to the San Javier Mission. We returned to the hotel at approximately 4:00 PM. As always, our tour coach included a wheelchair lift so everyone could participate.
